Doe leaping over a barbed wire fence in scenic Saskatchewan
White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginiania) can be recognized by its characteristic white tail, which it raises as a signal of alarm and is seen in its escape. The male buck usually weighs from 60-160 kg or in rare cases 132-350 lbs. depending on the gene pools and feed in a certain area. The female doe usually weighs between 50-60 kg or 90-130 lbs., but they will frequently weigh in excess of 60 kg or 130 lbs. The deer's coat is reddish-brown in the spring and summer, and turns to a gray-brown throughout the fall.
