Renaissance, Florence, Italy, Tuscany: Brunelleschi's Dome, Sant
The famous dome of Brunelleschi is the coverage of the cruise of the Duomo of Florence; was the largest dome in the world and remains the largest masonry dome ever built (longest diagonal of the inner dome 45 meters, that dell'esterna: 54). In 1418 the Opera del Duomo announced a public competition for the construction of the dome. Following the competition, which also had no official winners, Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti were appointed capomaestri. On August 7, 1420, construction began on the dome. In 1425, Ghiberti was ousted from the work, which passed entirely into the hands of Brunelleschi. The construction proceeded well without noticeable interruptions, until, in August 1436, it was finally officially celebrated with a solemn blessing of Pope Eugenius IV, the completion of the factory. After the construction of the dome was announced another public competition for the lantern, always won by Brunelleschi. Work began in 1446, however, only a few months before the death of the great architect; then they went under the direction of his friend and follower Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, to be finished by Antonio Manetti April 23, 1461.
