Descent of the ganges in Mahabalipuram, Tamil nadu, India
Descent of the Ganges is one of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a giant open-air rock cut bas relief sculptures carved on two monolithic rocks. The story depicted in the relief is the descent of the sacred river Ganges to earth from the heavens. The relief was created by Narasimhavarman-1 to celebrate the victory over Chalukiya king. There are 146 sculptures of animals, God, people and half-humans carved in the rock relief.
