Before 1666, the future port of Sète was on the territory of the municipality of Frontignan, Mont Saint-Clair was part of the diocese of Montpellier to the bottom of the hill. In 1666, under the reign of Louis XIV, construction of the port began with Pierre-Paul Riquet de Bonrepos, creator of the Canal du Midi.
