Members of the Carnaval Putleco in Oaxaca perform during the 44th Annual Carnaval in San Francisco, CA.
The outfits worn by the men are called tiliches. Made with pieces of colorful fabric, these costumes date back to the 19th century when people celebrated the expulsion of French invaders from the Oaxacan coast. The garments are prepared about one year before the carnival and the whole family participates in the production.
