Abandoned waterwheel Pontsmil Luxulayn St Austell Cornwall
The old abandoned waterwheel at Pontsmill in the Luxulyan valley was primarily the driving engine to pull mineral laden trams from the nearby Copper rich Fowey Consols mine, this deep sided valley was too steep to use ponies as transport, so Joseph Treffry designed a cable drawn tramway to negate this problem in the early 1800s. The system was powered by a series of waterwheel driven engines, this was complimented by a series of horsedrawn trams, the mine was worked out by 1865 and the waterwheels were left to rot in situ.
